This is a unique and genuine 1983-P Jefferson Nickel from the Philadelphia mint featuring a significant "struck through grease" error. This error occurred when the obverse die's recesses became clogged with debris, preventing the design from being fully imparted onto the coin.
As a result, a large portion of Jefferson's bust, including his neck and parts of his jacket, is either completely missing or extremely weak. The striking effect gives the impression that his head is "floating" above the coin's surface. This is a dramatic and highly visible example of a mint error that is prized by collectors specializing in such pieces.
