Suddenly, a bald eagle appeared on the old, abandoned post, as if it had always been there. Perhaps it had, and I simply hadn't noticed it initially. The eagle sat motionless, save for its head, which swiveled to take in its surroundings. Its keen eyes missed nothing. This post stood alone along a waterway outside Juneau, Alaska, and the eagle seemed to know it well, perching there regularly. As I quietly approached for a better photograph, the eagle was aware of my presence but didn't react. I moved slowly and carefully, not wanting to disturb the wildlife or miss the chance for an incredible shot. It took time and patience, but eventually, I looked up from checking my footing and the post was empty again. I wondered if the eagle had ever been there, but the photograph assured me it had.
