Herkimer diamonds are quartz crystals that are mined in Herkimer County, New York and are known for their clarity and natural faceting. This is why they are referred to as diamonds even though they are not.
Herkimer diamonds are named after the county where they were discovered and are also known as Middleville or Little Falls diamonds. They were first discovered in the late 18th century when workers were cutting into the dolomite of the Mohawk River Valley
It is the oldest (500 million years old), clearest, hardest (7.5 on Mohs scale) quartz crystal in the world
